What Is Absolute Lymphocyte Count (ALC)?

Absolute Lymphocyte Count (ALC) is the estimated number of lymphocytes circulating in the blood. It is calculated from the total white blood cell count and the percentage of lymphocytes reported in the CBC differential.

Unlike the lymphocyte percentage alone, the ALC provides an absolute estimate of the number of lymphocytes in the circulation. It is commonly reported as cells/µL or ×10³/µL.

ALC = WBC × Lymphocyte % ÷ 100

When WBC is reported in ×10³/µL, the calculated ALC is obtained in ×10³/µL. To convert the result to cells/µL, multiply the value by 1,000.

ALC (cells/µL) = ALC (×10³/µL) × 1,000

Example ALC Calculation

Consider a patient with a total WBC count of 6.0 ×10³/µL and a lymphocyte percentage of 30%.

ALC = 6.0 × 30 ÷ 100

ALC = 1.8 ×10³/µL

ALC = 1,800 cells/µL

Adult ALC Reference Range
